Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, formerly a collegiate church.
1342 and C16th. Thatched roof. Transepts and chancel removed in
1542, the present church consists of an aisled nave and West tower
of the C14th, and a C20th short apsidal chancel. The nave roof was
reconstructed in 1575 by Robert Buston.
Remains of the chancel foundations continue to the East. The
remains of moulded capitals and piers of the North transept survive,
as do the chancel arch piers. Grade I.(2)
Church of St John the Evangelist. This was the Church of the College
founded in 1342 by Edmund Gonville, founder of Gonville and Caius
College, Cambridge. While that would explain the size which the
church had before the 59' long chancel was pulled down and replaced,
the chancel arch and the arches which led into the former transepts,
and the angle shafts close to them and indicative of former vaults, al
seem to be earlier than 1342, the mouldings suggesting a date of
ca.1300, and the nave and tower windows also bear out such a
date.(3)
