Late 14th or early 15th century pele tower with a 16th century hall wing; there are also 17th century additions. In 1985 the building was being restored and converted into offices by the National Coal Board, at which time it was surveyed and extensively photographed. Built of rubble and partly rendered with greenslate roofs.

Branthwaite Hall; 'A pele tower of the late fourteenth century. Tudor wing added on the north side, the date 1604 appears on the boss of a label above a .... window to the right of the present front door. C. 1650, the west front was remodelled in the Renaissance style' (a). The tower is 34.5 feet x 27.5 feet in plan and is 39 feet to the top of the battlements. The walls are 4.5 feet thick and are built from; 'Large rubble local stone'. It has a vaulted basement and two floors above, the entrance, being in the NE corner. (2)

A branch of the Skelton family of Armathwaite Castle, resided at Branthwaite Hall from 1422 to 1727. (3)

Description of Tudor wing by authority 2 and 2a correct. The western face is of two storeys and the east face of three. The whole is stone constructed; original mullioned windows of from two to four lights with hood moulding over - some of these windows are now blocked and the date 1604 is visible, as noted by authority 2. The boss of a first floor label is inscribed with a small heraldic polaque. The architecture of the west face is entirely Renaissance, with the exception of fragmentary earlier blocked windows, modern casements and two exceptionally strong buttresses. Four of the renaissance windows are blocked with modern concrete facing; the complete fabric shows restoration and reconstruction at various periods. The occupier confirmed the published name as correct.

Description of the Tower by authority 2 correct, the feature is in an excellent state of restoration. Original architectural features include, blocked rectangular windows at all floor levels, corbelled stone spouting and a small watch tower in the NE corner. The coping of the embattlements is modern.

NY 065253. The scheduled area of Branthwaite Hall has been extended immediately north of the hall. (9)

Branthwaite Hall A late 14th or early 15th century tower house with a 16th century wing; 1604 and 1670s alterations for the Skelton Family. Owned by the National Coal Board who at the time of the resurvey in 1985 were renovating the building for use as offices. Otherwise at time of resurvey derelict and unoccupied. (10)
