DESCRIPTION

Moated manor house, which was developed as a royal residence by Edward III, was identified during excavations at Platform Wharf between 1985-1991. The building was extant during the 14th century. The excavations also located part of a 17th century Delftware pottery works, a Bronze Age and Iron Age ditch and finds including early Medieval pottery.

(TQ34787971 Moated manor house of Edward III. The earliest references to a royal manor at Rotherhithe are from 1349 The manor comprised of two courts, that to the north being adjacent to the river, and beung the principal court., surrounded by a moat and wall. There are references to a hall, a chapel and kitchens. Trial excavation from July 1986 to January 1987 revealed substantial remains of the stone walls of the Inner Court building (a rectangular structure 30mx20m with walls 1m thick and a tower at the North West corner), surrounded by an 8m wide moat with the remains of a timber bridge. Remains of a 17th century Delft-ware pottery were also revealed in the Inner and Outer court. (centred to TQ34807970 using Eng Heritage Record Plan and OS 1:10000 1981) (1-2)
