The possible existence of a castle at Burton (SK 2522) is mentioned by Armitage, who quotes from Domesday that "Henry de Ferrers has half a hide in Burton in which his castle sits," and also says that Tutbury is mentioned separately. She points out however, that the Abbot of Burton held the whole town both before and after the Conquest, and that there is no evidence for, nor any other mention of such a castle. Erdeswick (1593-1603) thought the Domesday entry was a mistake for Henry de Ferrer's castle of Tutbury (SK 22 NW 2), and Eyton says that at Domesday, Burton was a district as well as a town, and included what is now the parish of Tutbury.
