Four sections were cut across the earthwork, three between Hoober Lane and Cortworth Lane, and one ca. 50m North of Hoober Lane. The sections were cut at SK41559827, 41469815, 41489803, and 4126978. The ditch profile showed a remarkable degree of conformity with ditch profiles excavated elsewhere, leading the excavator to suggest the entire earthwork is of a single constructional phase. No dating evidence was found.

Test pitting prior to a proposed housing development on the line of the Roman Ridge earthwork revealed a substantial ditch 2.4m wide and excavated to 0.5m, turning north-eastwards to converge with Jenkin Road in the western part of the site. No dating evidence was recovered but the course of the earthwork was established in this section.

Archival study followed by earthwork survey of archaeological features in three woods: Wath Wood (centred SK 436 991); Boyd Royd Wood (SK 433 991) and Fox Cover (SK 435 988). Trans. Hunter Arch. Soc. 21 account mentions the presence of a holy well at SK 437 989. No evidence has been found, however, that would attach any religious significance to this structure. It is also suggested that the well was excavated in 1986 by the South Yorkshire Arch. Unit. This is also an error and, as far as can the ascertained, the site has never been excavated. (Ms L Matthews, South Yorkshire SMR. E-mail 15. 9. 03.).
