2002- 2006 Air Photograph Interpretation English Heritage: Gloucestershire NMP (North Cotswolds and Forest of Dean)

The Gloucestershire National Mapping Programme (NMP) survey covered the Forest of Dean and a small contextual zone, sample areas across the Cotswolds plus a complete survey of the northern parts of the Cotswolds. The project areas comprised 28 complete OS 1:10,000 scale quarter sheets (equivalent to 775 square kilometres) on the north Cotswolds, with 3 quarter sheets as pilots for the southern Cotswolds, plus 25 quarter sheets (equivalent to 531 square kilometres), up to the Welsh border on the western edge, of the Forest of Dean. The project also included small parts of Worcestershire and Warwickshire. An additional area was added (see Event description UID: 1437295) to provide contextual data for excavations along the Carrant Valley.

The aim of the project is to interpret and transcribe, at a scale of 1:10000, all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs, dating from prehistory to the twentieth century, including industrial and military sites. The main air photo sources consulted are held at the NMRC Swindon and the Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography (CUCAP), although cover held by the County Council will also be consulted. The archaeological mapping, using computerised plotting (AERIAL 5.18 and 5.24 and AutoCAD Map5), produces digital files and overlays to the 1:10,000 OS map base. Accompanying monument records are input to English Heritage's National Monuments Record database, AMIE. Copies of the finished plots will be available in both hard copy and digital form on the completion of the project. All data and documentation relating to the project will be archived at the National Monuments Record.

The NMP project began in May 2002, the Forest of Dean NMP survey is complete and the northern Cotswolds are scheduled to complete in Summer 2006.

As anticipated, the survey has added significantly to the number of sites in the Forest of Dean, and has led to the discovery of numerous previously unidentified monuments. This is an area where a vast amount of work by numerous individuals has built up a comprehensive record of industrial sites, and it was no surprise that the majority of features recorded by the NMP survey were associated with the Forest's industries. By combining the aerial photographic evidence with the information available within existing documentary records, especially those held by Gloucestershire SMR, and the valuable knowledge of local interest groups, the NMP survey has provided a unique overview of the surviving remains, particularly those associated with post medieval industry.

A report on the Forest of Dean NMP survey was issued in Spring 2006 (English Heritage Research Department Report Series 28/2006).

For further details on the project please contact Helen Winton at Aerial Survey, English Heritage, Swindon.
