The Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP project is part of RCHME's wider National Mapping Programme (NMP). Any enquiries concerning the project can be made to Simon Crutchley who was Project Coordinator.
The overall objectives of the project were to map, describe and classify all archaeological features showing as cropmarks or earthworks on aerial photographs. The mapping was carried out at 1:10,000 scale using manual methods of transcription supplemented by computerised plotting using the University of Bradford's AERIAL program where necessary. The main sources of photography used were the specialist collection held at the NMRC Swindon, the Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography (CUCAP) and the holdings of Wiltshire County Council. The archaeological sites transcribed were recorded using the MORPH2 software developed by RCHME.
27 OS 1:10,000 quarter sheets were surveyed during the project which covered the area defined by the boundaries of the military training area. As a general rule all quarter sheets which contained a part of the training area were mapped in their entirity. The exceptions lie on the northern edge of the Plain, where SU05NW, SU05NE and SU15NW were not mapped due to time constraints.
The project was begun in December 1994 and the mapping phase was completed in August 1995. All data is currently recorded on the stand-alone MORPH2 database at the National Monuments Record, but will in time be incorporated into the NewHIS database. The archive, which consists of the transcription pencil and inked overlays, paper records ( including Map Note Sheets and individual Site Record Forms), the specification and final report, are held in the National Monuments Record Centre in Swindon (Collection UID 1059507).

An enhancement project undertaken by RCHME Inventory Record staff focusing on records of sites, monuments and findspots within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site. Existing monument records will be enhanced and new rrecords created via consultation of published sources.

The English Heritage: Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project formed part of the 2001 programme of the Aerial Survey section of English Heritage.
The aims of this project fell within the National Mapping Programme approach which is to enhance our understaning about past human settlement, by providing primary information and syntheses for all archaeological sites and landscapes (visible on aerial photographs) from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century.
The project aim was to map all archaeological features, visible on aerial photographs, within the environs of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site (WHS). This provided the most up-to-date aerial survey for the area and was intended to inform the Environmental Impact Assessment taking place in advance of proposed changes in the area as a result of the English Heritage Stonehenge Master Plan (English Heritage, 2000).
A "core" area was mapped at 1:2500 scale around the present route of the A303 to provide accurate information for the curation or investigation of archaeological sites in advance of alterations to the road. This area was bounded by the following grid references: SU 0500 4000, SU 1700 0400, SU 1700 4300 and SU 0500 4300.
An extended area was mapped at 1:10,000 scale to form an archaeological context for the core area and the WHS. This area covers the OS 1:10,000 scale quarter sheets SU 03 NE; SU 04 NE, SE; SU 13 NW, NE; SU 14 NW, NE, SW SE.
The mapping was carried out using the University of Bradford AERIAL5 aerial photograph rectification system and AutoCAD. The mapping was incorporated into the Stonehenge WHS Geographical Information System.
The archive consists of AutoCAD drawings corresponding to each 1:10,000 quarter sheet and the 1:2500 scale area and supporting documentation, the project specification and a report on the findings of the project. NewHIS monument records were amended or created for each site mapped.
